Most developers think about frontend development in terms of components. We talk about hooks, props, and styling. But as an application grows from a simple dashboard to an enterprise ecosystem with hundreds of routes and dozens of teams, thinking in components is no longer enough. You have to start thinking in systems.

In my decade of building and breaking large-scale web apps, I have learned that the most expensive mistakes aren't made in the code; they are made in the architecture. This post is about how to design systems that survive the test of time, team turnover, and the inevitable "can we add this feature by Friday?" request.

1. The Illusion of Order: Why Folders Aren't Architecture

We have all seen it: the src/components folder that eventually becomes a graveyard of 500 files with names like ButtonV2Final.tsx. Many engineers mistake a folder structure for an architecture. A folder structure is just a filing cabinet; architecture is the set of rules that governs how information flows between those files.

The Fractal Architecture Pattern

Instead of a flat structure, I advocate for a fractal approach. In a fractal architecture, every feature or module is a self-contained ecosystem. It should have its own components, hooks, services, and tests.

  • Rule of thumb: If you can move a feature folder into a separate repository and it only breaks because of a few shared UI primitives, you have achieved healthy decoupling.
  • The Trade-off: This leads to some duplication. You might end up with two slightly different useUserHistory hooks. However, duplication is far cheaper than the wrong abstraction. When two teams share a single complex hook, any change made by Team A risks breaking Team B's entire workflow.

2. State Management: The Separation of Church and State

One of the biggest causes of technical debt in frontend systems is the mixing of "Business Logic" and "View Logic." When your React components are full of data fetching, data transformation, and error handling, you haven't built an app; you've built a spaghetti monster.

Decoupling Logic from UI

An architect's job is to ensure the UI is a thin, "dumb" layer. I suggest a three-layer approach to state:

  1. Server State: Managed by tools like TanStack Query. This handles caching, revalidation, and loading states.
  2. Domain State: This is the core logic. If you are building a Fintech app, the calculation of interest rates belongs here. This should be pure JavaScript or TypeScript, completely independent of your UI framework (React, Vue, or Svelte).
  3. UI State: Modals, sidebar toggles, and form inputs. This stays in the component or a local store.

By treating the Domain State as a standalone library, you make your application testable without needing to mount a single DOM element. This is how you scale to 90% plus test coverage without losing your mind.

3. The Micro-Frontend Dilemma: Autonomy vs. Consistency

Micro-frontends are the current industry buzzword, but they are a double-edged sword. I have seen companies adopt them because they wanted to feel "modern," only to end up with a website that loads 4MB of redundant JavaScript and has five different shades of blue across five different modules.

When to Go Micro

You should only consider micro-frontends if your organization has reached "Team Cognitive Load" limits. If a single developer can no longer understand the whole codebase, it’s time to split.

The Architect's Checklist for Micro-frontends:

  • Orchestration: Use a shell (Host) to manage authentication and routing.
  • Shared Dependencies: Use Module Federation to share heavy libraries like React or Lodash across builds.
  • Design System: You MUST have a robust, versioned design system before splitting. Otherwise, your UX will fragment, and your users will feel the pain.

4. Managing Technical Debt as Currency

As a Technical Lead, you must view technical debt as a financial instrument. It is not always bad to take out a "loan" by shipping a hacky solution to meet a market deadline. The problem is when the interest payments (the time spent fixing bugs and dealing with regressions) exceed your team's capacity to build new features.

The "Architecture Decision Record" (ADR)

One tool I use to manage this is the ADR. Every time we make a major architectural choice—like switching to Tailwind or adopting a new state library—we document it. We document the context, the options considered, and why we chose the path we did. This prevents the "Why did they do it this way?" syndrome two years later when the original team has moved on.
